Their website says things like "merging past and present in a timeless style" then bangs on a bit about Steve McQueen. As you would if he'd liked the things you'd made, too.
Which is all well and good but let's face it, however much you compete for pole position on the supermarket car-park grid, the only Grand Prix you're going to be taking home is a two-for-one deal on tomato soup. Timelessly.
There's actually nothing timeless about Persol, unless you think things can't be made properly and stylishly today, the same way they have been, by hand, using the original tools for decades. In which case you'd be wrong. Several of the brand's current designs date back sixty years and more for the every good reasons that people who can afford it like things that are made properly. Things that look as if they were put together by people who care about what they're doing. And if ever a brand did these do, from Steve McQueen's iconic and useful favourite folders to the wonderfully bonkers Italian tram drivers shades.
What were they thinking? Big lenses to keep out dust and debris, a keyhole bridge that makes the word 'distinctive' something of an understatement and peaks on top of it that Batman would envy. Marcello Mastroianni wore these Model 649s in Divorce Italian Style, presumably after he said "Sorry, mia cara, you're not borrowing mine."
Who knew tram drivers could be that glamorous? The brand sums up the difference between style and design as something that makes every day a richer day or something reserved for special occasions. Natural elegance and poise compared to mass-produced assembly-line fashion. Just think what a pair of Persols could have done for Reg Varney in On The Buses.
Actually, just look at the designs and their detailing instead. They're a lot easier on the eye.
